Mirabilia Art Gallery is a new space in the heart of Rome inspired by the Renaissance’s rooms of wonder, better known as Wunderkammer.
The 16th and the 17th century were important periods for science and discovery, not by chance, the word “Renaissance” identifies the rebirth of mankind under artistic, scientific and humanistic aspects. New journeys and discoveries around the world brought strange and exotic objects such as fruit, plants, stones, gems and bizarre animal species to Europe, leaving people awe of their originality and otherworldly appearance. This is when the concept of Wunderkammer was born. The idea to store curiosities from all over the world in one space was the springboard for the concept of museums as we know them today.
Mirabilia Art Gallery contains this forgotten world. It hosts a vast collection ranging from precious antiques and beautiful paintings to perfectly preserved animals and stunning marbles. The look of the gallery changes frequently due to the extensive travels of the owner, who buys, restores and sells objects ensuring new life and new features in his personal collection. During winter, the art gallery hosts many artists who share the passion for nature and for antiques but this incredible location can also be defined as a museum and a shop, or a magical place where to sit, relax and enjoy the world of wonders that ancient Romans called “Mirabilia”.
